Indigenous Peoples Day - In the Name of God: Christian Boarding Schools and the Systematic Genocide of Indigenous Children in North America

Hofstra University
Hempstead, NY (Long Island)

This session will examine the tragic history of Christian Boarding Schools. Indigenous children in both the U.S. and Canada were forcibly abducted from their homes and put into Christian and government run boarding schools beginning in the mid 1800’s and continuing into the 1990’s, part of a government policy designed to “civilize” Indians and to stamp out Native cultures. We will shine the light on this history, the impunity with which it was carried out for over a century, and the ways in which indigenous communities are currently bringing it back to light through organizing and reflection.
